The 2027 Ford Mustang Mach-E Made 300-Mile Range the New Baseline

Ford has quietly done something buyers have been asking for since the Mustang Mach-E launched: it stopped selling a short-range version of its electric crossover. For 2027, the 73-kilowatt-hour battery that used to be standard on the Select and Premium trims is gone, leaving the 88 kWh extended-range pack as the only choice on both. The GT and Rally models keep their 91 kWh unit.

What that does to range

The effect on the entry models is the story. The 2026 Select with the small pack and rear-wheel drive carried an estimated 260 miles of range, and the all-wheel-drive version managed 240 miles. With the extended-range battery now fitted as standard, those figures rise to 320 miles and 300 miles respectively.

That is a 60-mile jump at the bottom of the lineup — and it lands at the trim level where range anxiety usually bites hardest. Ford did not simply bolt in a bigger pack and leave the rest alone. The front electric motor used on all-wheel-drive cars was redesigned: it makes the same power as before but costs less to build, which helps offset the cost of standardising the larger battery.

What it costs

The 2027 Mustang Mach-E Select RWD starts at $42,040 including destination. That is $2,200 more than the outgoing model fitted with the smaller-capacity battery — so buyers are paying a modest premium for a much larger pack, not the full cost of the upgrade.

The price structure makes more sense when you look at it that way. Ford’s previous entry models existed to advertise a lower number on the window sticker; the 2027 versions exist to be driven. Anyone cross-shopping a base Mach-E against, say, a mid-range Korean crossover should account for the fact that the Ford now has meaningfully more usable range than it did last year.

The new Trail trim

The other 2027 addition is a Trail package, a $2,295 option available only on the Select with all-wheel drive.

  • Dual-motor all-wheel drive with 19-inch wheels and Michelin CrossClimate2 tires
  • A small suspension lift: 10 millimetres at the front and 15 millimetres at the rear
  • Pro Power Onboard, delivering up to 400 watts through two household sockets
  • Distinctive graphics, plus an optional Thule clamp-on cross bar kit for bikes, kayaks or gear boxes

Ford is not pretending this is a rock crawler. The Trail is a standard Mach-E with slightly more ground clearance and all-season rubber that will hold up better on gravel and dirt roads. That is a reasonable niche to fill — the Rally trim that came before it is a much more expensive, much more focused proposition, and it remains on sale.

Charging it at home

The bigger battery changes the home-charging maths a little. An 88 kWh pack on a 48-amp, 240-volt home circuit — about 11.5 kW — replenishes from empty in a little under eight hours, which is comfortably an overnight job. Owners who charge on a standard 120-volt household outlet will find the extended-range pack noticeably slower to top up than the old 73 kWh version; if you are moving from a small-pack Mach-E to a 2027 model, a Level 2 installation stops being optional.

On the connector question, the Mach-E still uses a CCS1 inlet, with Ford supplying NACS adapters so owners can use Tesla’s Supercharger network. Check adapter eligibility for your model year before planning a road trip around it.

The takeaway

By removing the small battery, Ford has made 300 miles the price of admission to the Mach-E range rather than a feature you pay extra for. In a market where Kia is pruning low-range sub-packs on the EV6 and other automakers are reshuffling 2027 trim pricing, that looks less like generosity and more like a recognition of where the floor has moved. Range anxiety has not been solved, but it is getting harder to sell a base EV without addressing it.

Order books for the 2027 Mustang Mach-E are open at US dealers now. Ford says the Build & Price configurator opens early next year, with the first Trail models expected to ship in the first quarter of 2027.
